Ok, so I’ve been talking a lot about the psychology of audio lately, and I’m sorry, but a lot of you are in denial. In fact I’ve only got one word for your nonsense about how expensive audio cables, amps and other components sound so differently from one another. Bullsh*t. I’m in good company. Paul W. Klipsch, inventor of the eponymous Klipschorn spent 40 years of his life telling audio quacks ...

The saleslady says there’s no AM radio in Turkey and there never has been. Is that true? Well, not quite. While our Turkish friend may have never heard AM radio in Turkey before, it does exist, or at least it did. In fact, the first radio broadcast in Turkey was way back in 1927 and that, of course was AM as FM wasn’t even invented until 1933. The first FM broadcast in Turkey didn’t come until ...

Wow, my last video really ticked a lot of you haters off. I don’t know why. All I said was: “There’s a huge psychological element to listening to hi-fi. Often, we hear what we want to hear. None of us can really remember well enough what one piece of gear sounds like to compare it to something we’re listening to at the moment. Most modern amplifiers really sound exactly the same. Unlike amplifi...

Humans are incredibly susceptible to bias and we tend to hear what we want to hear. This is why we have so many people claiming that amps, CD players, cables, etc. sound differently from one another. But if they were put to the test, these people most often could never actually tell the difference. There’s a huge psychological element to stereo high fidelity equipment that few want to admit. Imagine it’s the winter of 1966. You live in upstate New York and the Blizzard of 1966, the greatest storm in its history, has paralyzed the area with up to 8.5 feet of snow. Two-hundred-and-one people are dead. Thirty-one froze to death. Forty-six died in fires trying to keep their homes warm. Others, dead from heart attacks while shoveling or from traffic accidents on slick roads. In the stor...

Introduced in 1964, McIntosh promised a lot from the MI-3 maximum performance indicator. It was five laboratory instruments in one. And would show you what you needed to do to improve your system’s overall performance. At a pricey $249 (about $2,400 in today's dollars) did it really live up to the hype? And just what is this thing anyway? Topics and timestamps covered in the video: 0:00 Introdu...

    My brother and I purchased new Pioneer receivers at the same time back in the 70's. I got an SX-950 and my brother went for the big SX-1250. Five years ago I got mine rebuilt and he left his alone. We are both in agreement that the rebuilt 950 now sounds much, much better than his 1250. I feel more confident than he does that mine will last another 30-40 years.

    Thanks for the videos - a lot of work for sure, and very helpful! Something that would make it even more helpful is for you to slow down, way down, on the disassembly part in Part 1. There are a lot of chassis parts to remember how to put back once they're apart and, given the age of these guys, not everything fits as a factory fresh unit did, I'm sure. Thanks!

    For years, I’ve been an avid reader of WhatHifi. I bought into a few of their favourites before I realised the trends. It’s not independent journalism, it’s a highly corrupt and greedy industry, especially in the UK. I’ve enjoyed my basic Marantz amp more than the Cyrus at several times the price. The KEF and Acoustic Energy speakers sounded ordinary. My Pioneer home cinema system was nothing special. I feel sorry for people who spent thousands, rather than hundreds based on reading subsidised reviews. You could still buy older kit second-hand at a fraction of the price, even a few years after release. Imagine owning the same kit but at third or quarter of the price. The whole electronics market is a con.

    I mostly agree with everything you said. Such has been my experience too! That said, I wanted to reply (way too late) to the question that was submitted regarding the Ohm Walsh 2000 speakers. My experience was that they sounded a bit disappointing in a large living room/great room. Just overly “thin”, but that was significantly improved with Dirac room correction and a bump of the bass curve. However, when I eventually relocated them into my bedroom, they suddenly sounded absolutely glorious (no equalization needed)! Just an amazing transformation, merely from being in a different and smaller room.

    "Controversy"? An autotransformer is by definition not isolated. If there is an additional component that is an isolation transformer, and it's isolated. Nothing could possibly be controversial about it.

    I can't find a switch outlet as you've described in your video. Thanks for this video, especially disassembling the module! I was a bit surprised by the damage to the module in shipping. Sorry Ohm, that didn't happen in shipping so either our presenter here is lying or Ohm is and I'm siding with the presenter. Ohm - FAIL. Also for the price of this upgrade Ohm should have created a plate that adapts the new module to the cabinet and enables the screws to bite into the thicker part of the particle board. This was a poorly thought out part of the upgrade. Ohm - FAIL

    have you tried to make a tube amp with paper wax capacitors and compare the sound? The sound is different and there's no capacitor that sound better than those old paper ones. Try it before making conclusion, and give it to listen to someone who has ears. It can be that ppl who used to listen to modern crap lost their ability to hear. Like making an analogy you won't hear and distinguish any difference in Chinese tones, but for someone who grew up hearing tones the difference is so dramatic that different tones means absolutely different words. But if you listen to them you wouldn't notice any difference until you got familiar with those sounds a lot

    • @FluxCondenser
      @FluxCondenser Місяць тому

      Capacitors can also be used as filters whereas the capacitance value affects the frequencies that it will allow to pass. Think of capacitors in a crossover network, for example. The line capacitors use a capacitance value that creates a high-pass filter. So, the low 60Hz frequency of the line AC is blocked.

    I have this same receiver. It was working well until just recently. All of a sudden, there is a very loud buzzing noise coming out of speakers when the receiver is turned on. This is true whether speakers are plugged into A or B ports, with different speaker cables, with different speakers, and when headphones are plugged into the front jack. It is also true whether or not we are trying to play music through any of the various input ports (tuner, CD, etc.). I suspect something in the receiver broke and needs to be replaced. Any ideas what might need to be replaced or how to diagnose? Thanks!

    I would like to add a caveat to your final analysis of this unit. I certainly would not expect this unit to meet/exceed the original ratings/specifications stated when it was originally built. Please, let us be fair, and consider the age of the components and the lack of care that it has received over the last approximately 40 years. I'd say the old girl is doing quite well considering. Wouldn't you? Thanks for reviving this unit and keeping it out of the landfill!
